Founded in 1847, the French luxury brand is best known for its jewellery, watches, and leather goods and has sold some of the most expensive watches in the world, with some exceeding the million-dollar mark at auction.

In a letter to its customers, Cartier revealed that it had detected unauthorised activity on its systems that led to customer data being exposed.

“We are writing to inform you that an unauthorised part gained temporary access to our system and obtained limited client information,” it said.

While the company said it had contained the breach, it has confirmed that some personal data, including names, email addresses and countries, have been leaked.

“The affected information did not include any passwords, credit card details or other banking information,” the company added.

Cartier also warned that the leaked data could lead to scams or other malicious activity targeting its customers.

“Given the nature of the data, we recommend that you remain alert for any unsolicited communications or any other suspicious correspondence,” it said.

Cartier is the latest of a number of iconic fashion brands that have suffered data breaches.

Most recently, lingerie and fashion retailer Victoria’s Secret disabled some of its systems following a cyber incident.

“Valued customers, we identified and are taking steps to address a security incident. We have taken down our website and some in-store services as a precaution,” the company said.

“Our team is working around the clock to fully restore operations. We appreciate your patience during this process. In the meantime, our Victoria’s Secret and PINK stores remain open, and we look forward to serving you.”

Victoria’s Secret did not disclose any details of the incident, such as whether customer or company data could be at risk. However, in statements shared with media, the company details some of its responses.

Prior to this, both adidas and Dior also suffered cyber incidents. It is unclear if there is a connection between the four retailer breaches.

The recent incidents also closely follow the breach of three major UK retailers, M&S, Co-op and Harrods.
