An Australian Defence Force leader has been invited to the Expert Advisory Group for the Global Commission on Responsible AI in the Military Domain as the only military or government representative from Australia.
The commission is developing a strategic guidance report, which will identify short and long-term recommendations that support fundamental norm development and policy coherence, covering governance and regulation, law, technology and implications for decision making.
Lieutenant Colonel Adam Hepworth, director of Army’s Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation and Coordination Office, on behalf of the Dutch minister of foreign affairs, was invited to join the commission among personnel from more than 50 global leaders.
“The gravity of this appointment is not lost on me,” LTCOL Hepworth said.
“This is an opportunity for Army to have a seat at the table in global AI reform and governance and ensure our voice and our unique experience is contributing to the rules-based order.
“The commission is shaping the future of AI in the military domain and its mission aligns with the Australian Army’s commitment to responsible AI use.”
LTCOL Hepworth was reportedly chosen because of his practical military experience with artificial intelligence, combined with a PhD in computer science and more than a decade of academic effort and achievement in the field.
LTCOL Hepworth, who previously attended St Virgil’s College and Guilford Young College, said his STEM career in Army provided the perfect platform for his academic and professional pursuits.
“I’ve had an atypical career path in the Army, having been afforded incredible opportunities to contribute within STEM areas,” LTCOL Hepworth said.
“Technology and innovation are fields I’ve been passionate about since my schooling in Hobart and I’m thankful that Defence has allowed me to apply this passion and, in doing so, has enabled me to provide a meaningful contribution in return.”
Director-General Future Land Warfare Brigadier James Davis said LTCOL Hepworth’s appointment was a big win for Army.
“Relationships with leading experts in responsible warfare innovation is of great benefit to Army, particularly here in Land Capability Division,” BRIG Davis said.
“Our soldiers deserve advocates for responsible AI use in military, and that forms a big part of Adam’s undertaking in both Army Headquarters and the global commission.”
