Allectum and the SANS Institute have launched their 2022 Veterans Cyber Academy Scholarship, offering 20 veterans opportunities to study a free cyber security training program.

“This course provides exactly what students need to go from zero technical and security knowledge to a level of sufficient theoretical understanding and applied practical skills that enables them to speak the same language as industry professionals. Students will then undertake the GFACT certification exam,” the program outlined.

According to Allectum, the scholarship was designed to help upskill veterans and their spouses to provide additional employment opportunities. The launch of the program comes after successful SANS Institute cyber academies were rolled out in the United States and United Kingdom.

Following an initial aptitude assessment and selection process, the successful candidates will undergo a 16-week training academy. The training is held online and out of hours.

The 16-week academy is centred over three courses, with each course culminating in an exam and recognised cyber security qualification. The company confirmed that the participants will be provided with support and mentoring from industry professionals throughout the course.

An Allectum spokesperson further confirmed that the company will help engage with cyber security employers to find placement opportunities after the completion of the academy.

The announcement follows Defence's call for applications for the 2022 Australian Defence Force Cyber Gap Program in September, providing Australia’s future cyber workforce with exposure to Defences cyber capabilities.

The ADF Cyber Gap Program, run in conjunction with the Digital Transformation Agency, will provide exposure to Defence's cyber capabilities to students currently undertaking cyber qualifications.
