Speaking on Australian radio, Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said, “Data61 which is one of their [CSIRO’s] very high-powered research groups into cyber security research and that will partner with the ANU and the University of South Australia, and others as well, to increase the funding to do with cyber security threats, because obviously they have the capacity to cripple parts of the economy and of course parts of the Defence establishment.”

Some of the planned funding, to be disbursed through CSIRO, will go to University of South Australia, University of New South Wales, University of Melbourne, Deakin University, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, Australian National University and Swinburne University of Technology.

The funding is part of the Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF), which is designed to provide the creative solutions Australian defence needs while also benefitting Australian industry.

The NGTF is a 10-year strategic research and development program that Minister Pyne said will deliver remarkable results for the Australian Defence Force.

"This is a 10-year strategic research and development program that will deliver game-changing capabilities for the Australian Defence Force of the future," Minister Pyne said.

"This fund will draw on the collective scientific expertise of our nation across both industry and university sectors, to give the ADF a winning edge with advanced technologies."
