The ransomware group known as The Gentlemen has claimed another Australian victim, listing the Charters Towers-based All Souls St Gabriels School in a 9 October leak post.
The hackers have not shared how much data they stole or what they are demanding; however, the group is threatening to publish within four days.
A spokesperson for the school told Cyber Daily that it is aware of the claim and is continuing to investigate “a cyber incident involving an unauthorised party accessing a part of our systems”.
“As soon as we became aware of the incident, we immediately took steps to secure our systems, engage the support of cyber security and forensic experts and commence an investigation into the extent of the impact,” the school’s spokesman said.
“Protecting the privacy and information security of our school community is extremely important for us, and we are treating this incident seriously and responding with urgency.”
The school added that parents and staff were informed of the incident “late last week” as a matter of priority. Stakeholders will be kept updated, the spokesman said, as the investigation progresses.
“At this stage, the investigation into the impacts of the incident remains ongoing. If any personal information is identified as being involved, we will communicate with impacted individuals directly,” the school said.
“We are aware of online claims related to the incident and information that is said to belong to our school. External forensics experts are assessing these claims as part of the wider investigation, as well as running sophisticated online monitoring for any further developments that may arise.”
The Australian Cyber Security Centre has been notified, and All Souls St Gabriels will continue to notify government authorities as necessary.
“We understand the concern that these incidents can cause, and we appreciate the support being shown to All Souls St Gabriels School as we work through our investigation and response,” the school said.
Who is The Gentlemen?
Despite only emerging in September 2025, The Gentlemen has risen to the number-two spot when it comes to victim count, behind only the Qilin ransomware-as-a-service operation.
The group is thought to largely comprise Russian speakers and operates under a similar model to Qilin – affiliates keep 90 per cent of any ransom paid.
The Gentlemen’s most recent Australian victim was IT supplier Sharp Office, which fell victim to the hackers in early September.
