Defence’s Security Operations Centre (DSOC) Forensics team has finished 21st overall in the Splunk Boss of the SOC (BoTS) 2026 competition, testing its incident response and threat investigation skills against participants from across the Asia-Pacific.
The competition brought together 605 participants from 18 countries, with Defence fielding 55 personnel across 22 teams.
Participants investigated a simulated cyber attack using Splunk platforms, tracing an unfolding incident from its earliest warning signs through to its final impact. Teams applied data analysis and critical thinking to answer increasingly difficult questions, with points awarded for accuracy and speed.
DSOC team leader Flying Officer Kiara Nand said the competition gave personnel a practical environment to exercise their cyber security skills under pressure.
“Competitions like BoTS give participants the opportunity to practise their skills during a simulated end-to-end cyber incident in a compressed timeframe,” Nand said.
“They provide a realistic environment for members to exercise their cyber security drills and apply their knowledge in a practical setting.
“These experiences help build skills and confidence that can be applied directly in their Defence roles.”
The scenario was modelled on the types of cyber security incidents organisations may encounter in real-world environments, with both first-time participants and returning competitors taking part.
