PC hardware maker ASUS has warned customers by email about a security breach affecting its online store.
“At ASUS, we take the security of personal information seriously. Protecting the information entrusted to us is important and, in keeping with that commitment, we want to let you know about an incident that may have affected some of your information,” the company said in an email seen via media outlet KitGuru.
“ASUS identified unauthorised access to part of the ASUS eShop environment. Our investigation indicates that certain customer order information, including contact details and order records, may have been accessed.”
The company said that it was not aware of any misuse of the data or “any harm suffered by affected individuals”. In addition, ASUS said that credit card data or any other financial information was unaffected.
“Upon identifying the issue, ASUS promptly took steps to contain it,” the company said.
“We also commenced an investigation and have taken additional measures to secure the affected systems. Our investigation remains ongoing and we have not identified any evidence of ongoing unauthorised access.”
According to KitGuru, the email also warned customers that compromised data “could potentially be used by third parties to send convincing emails, text messages or telephone calls that appear to relate to ASUS products, services or orders”.
ASUS added that its customers should remain vigilant and be wary of any unsolicited communications from the company or referencing its products and services.
Cyber Daily has reached out to ASUS for further comment.
The company confirmed late last year that it had been impacted by an incident at a third-party supplier after being listed by the Everest ransomware group a few days before. The incidents are not thought to be related.
