Exclusive: Westco Motors Cairns suffers alleged ransomware attack

The Storm ransomware group has claimed its third Australian victim since it emerged earlier this month, sharing details of stolen data on its darknet leak site.

The hackers claimed to have breached Westco Motors Cairns in a 17 August leak post.

While Storm has not shared any details of its ransom demand, it has said it will publish the data on 12 October – an unusually long waiting period for a ransom negotiation.

Nor have the hackers shared the volume of data allegedly stolen. Storm has, however, published more than a dozen documents it said were stolen in the cyber attack, including vehicle identification numbers, tax invoices, and customer contact details listing email addresses and mobile phone numbers.

Cyber Daily has reached out to Westco Motors for comment, but has yet to receive a response.

Who is Storm?

Storm only emerged as a potential threat this month, although in that time the group has posted the details of 26 alleged victims, with three of them Australian, including Ramsey Bros, which was targeted at roughly the same time as Westco Motors Cairns.

The group describes itself as a “premier, results-driven firm operating at the intersection of high finance and specialised strategic services”.

Storm said it does not target organisations within the Commonwealth of Independent States and is actively recruiting affiliates.

“We are looking for dedicated specialists who operate with the highest level of proficiency,” Storm said on its leak site.

“If you are a professional seeking to align with a sophisticated global organisation, we invite you to reach out.”

Who is Westco Motors Cairns?

Westco Motors describes itself as the “largest prestige car dealership in beautiful Tropical North Queensland”.

The company is a specialist BMW dealership, offering vehicle sales, trade-ins, and servicing, as well as financial services.

“Westco Motors also deal in Approved BMW used cars, Motor Cycles and everyone’s favorite legend the MINI,” the company says on its website.
