Australia is expanding its cyber defence capabilities with the establishment of a specialist Cyber Reserve Force, providing experienced professionals from industry, government, and academia with a new pathway to contribute directly to national security.
Established within 12 months, the Cyber Reserve Force is a key outcome of the 2023 Defence Strategic Review and is designed to give Defence access to high-demand technical expertise without requiring specialists to leave their civilian careers.
Personnel recruited into the force will bring contemporary expertise in areas including cyber operations, artificial intelligence, network engineering, cloud security, digital forensics, incident response, threat intelligence, and cyber strategy.
The reserve will provide Defence with specialist advice, technical expertise, operational support, and the ability to rapidly surge cyber capabilities when required, while strengthening links between the Australian Defence Force and the broader national cyber ecosystem.
Defence has also introduced a new entry pathway intended to reduce barriers for experienced cyber professionals by recognising existing skills, experience and demonstrated capability while maintaining Defence standards.
The appointment of the first direct-entry Cyber Reserve Force member marks an important milestone in the development of the new specialist workforce.
Acting Commander Cyber Command, Air Commodore Michael Reidy, said cyber power had become an increasingly important element of Australia’s national defence.
“The Cyber Reserve Force enables Defence to access highly specialised expertise, strengthening our ability to defend, fight and prevail in an increasingly contested and complex digital battlespace,” AIRCDRE Reidy said.
The initiative reflects a broader shift in how Defence is approaching workforce development in highly technical fields, where specialist skills are often concentrated in the private sector and can be difficult to develop and retain through traditional military recruitment models.
By allowing cyber specialists to maintain civilian careers while contributing their expertise to Defence missions, the Cyber Reserve Force could provide a more flexible model for accessing Australia’s growing pool of technical talent.
The force is intended to broaden Defence’s access to cyber expertise while creating a more agile workforce capable of responding to rapidly evolving technological and security challenges.
