The Cl0p hacking group has listed Australian firm Midland as one of dozens of victims of a recent cyber extortion spree.
The company was listed on 12 August, with Cl0p claiming to have accessed half a gigabyte of data, which the hackers claim includes project information and at least one database.
“This is the list of companies that did not reach to us. To avoid publication contact us before your name is revealed and your data,” Cl0p said when it posted the trove of victims.
Initially, the company names were redacted, but within a day, those names had been revealed, including several high-profile companies such as Shell and General Electric.
Midland has yet to respond to Cyber Daily’s request for comment. Other companies, however, have confirmed they are investigating Cl0p’s claims, as reported by Reuters.
“Philips has identified and contained an attempted cyber security compromise of a specific enterprise server related to internal data,” Philips said in a statement.
A Shell spokesperson told the outlet: “We are working with our security teams and relevant experts to investigate the situation.”
Who is Cl0p?
Cl0p – also known as Clop – is well known for taking advantage of vulnerabilities in popular third-party software platforms. Most recently, it appeared to be linked to an email campaign sent to company executives, claiming it had accessed data on their Oracle E-Business Suite platforms, and before that, the MOVEit file-sharing platform.
“We are CL0P team. If you haven’t heard about us, you can Google us on internet,” an alleged Cl0p spokesperson said in an email published last year by Dark Web Informer.
“We have recently breached your Oracle E-Business Suite application and copied a lot of documents. All the private files and other information are now held on our systems.”
Earlier this year, the group targeted several Australian IT service providers and their clients.
Who is Midland?
Midland’s head office is in Parkes, NSW, and the company also has a manufacturing branch in Kyneton, Victoria.
The company trades in open-top truck trailers to the mining, waste management, and agricultural sectors.
