LexisNexis Risk Solutions has released its latest Cybercrime Report, showing that digital fraud attacks have risen by 17 per cent since 2025, with mobile phone-based attacks growing at faster rates than traditional desktop and laptop scams.
Domestic fraud attacks were found to target multiple industries, with the most significant being finance and e-commerce, followed by telecommunications networks.
“The attack rate here grew across all channels, with mobile attack rate growth outpacing desktop, bucking the general shift seen globally of attacks returning to the traditional desktop browser channel,” the report said.
“In Australia, the ongoing shift to mobile attacks suggests that criminals are continuing to see success with these attack methods, potentially encountering less secure defences across mobile channels.”
The report additionally noted that attacks by non-human bots had decreased in Australia by 12 per cent year on year. This is likely due to the rise of human threat actors and organised cyber criminal groups that operate around the world.
LexisNexis’s findings reported that digital fraud in Australia has links to institutions in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
“Well-publicised data breaches in recent years have created plentiful opportunities for fraudsters; the Australian Bureau of Statistics has reported increasing identity theft rates in recent years,” the report said.
“Scams and card fraud continue to be serious concerns in the country as well.”
