Report: Fraud threats on the rise in 2026

A recently released report by Experian has identified that businesses are failing to keep up with the ever-evolving nature of fraud and scam schemes in Australia.

The report found that while the number of businesses falling victim to fraud loss is rising, the tech and security response is declining.

Seventy-three per cent of Australian businesses said their current infrastructure to combat fraud cannot keep up with the consistent pace of threats, and another 68 per cent expect more attacks in 2026 than in previous years.

“Fraud losses are rising, attacks are becoming more sophisticated, and many businesses know their existing technology can’t keep pace,” said Mathew Demetriou, managing director for software solutions ANZ at Experian.

“The rise of generative AI is accelerating both the scale and sophistication of attacks, making it critical for organisations to reassess their fraud prevention strategies.”

Findings from the report pointed out that 71 per cent of businesses worldwide are investing more in fraud tech rather than in human analysts, with 67 per cent planning to invest in data analysis tools.

“Australian organisations are adapting to a rapidly evolving fraud landscape,” said Demetriou.

“Device intelligence, behavioural analytics, and machine learning are becoming essential to effective defence.”

The report also noted that nearly three-quarters of businesses agreed that sharing intelligence on fraud is a critical move to stay ahead of potential threats.

“The organisations that act now to modernise and collaborate will be the ones best positioned to protect trust and growth in the years ahead,” Demetriou said.
