Japanese chip-testing firm Advantest confirms ransomware incident

A Japanese firm specialising in testing and designing semiconductors for use in IoT and 5G devices has confirmed it is investigating a ransomware attack.

Tokyo-based Advantest disclosed the incident in a 19 February announcement on its website.

“Leading semiconductor test equipment supplier Advantest Corporation announced today that it is responding to a cyber security incident involving ransomware that may have impacted certain systems within its network,” Advantest said.

The company said it detected “unusual activity within its IT environment” on 15 February, after which it activated its incident response protocols and took the affected systems offline. Advantest also engaged third-party cyber security experts to assist with its investigations.

“Preliminary findings appear to indicate that an unauthorised third party may have gained access to portions of the company’s network and deployed ransomware,” Advantest said.

“If our investigation determines that customer or employee data was affected, we will notify impacted persons directly and provide guidance on protective measures. This investigation is actively ongoing and is being carried out in close collaboration with leading cyber security experts.”

Advantest is focused on both understanding the incident itself and strengthening its security systems.

As of publication, no ransomware actor has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, as the incident happened barely a week ago, the hacking group in question is likely still attempting to negotiate a ransomware payment.

Outside of Japan, Advantest has offices in Europe and the United States and employs 6,464 people as of 2023.

“The company also conducts R&D to address emerging testing challenges and applications; develops advanced test-interface solutions for wafer sort and final test; produces scanning electron microscopes essential to photomask manufacturing; and offers system-level test solutions and other test-related accessories,” the company said on its website.
