Proofpoint has finalised its US$1.8 billion acquisition of Hornetsecurity, a move that extends the US cybersecurity company’s reach into the small and midsize business market and the managed service provider channel.

The deal gives Proofpoint a major presence in Europe through Hornetsecurity’s network of more than 12,000 MSPs and channel partners, serving over 125,000 customers.

It also marks an expansion of Proofpoint’s security platform, which it is positioning to protect what it calls the “agentic workspace” – the combination of people, AI agents, and organisational data.

“We’re thrilled to officially welcome Hornetsecurity to Proofpoint and further our mission to protect the emerging agentic workspace for customers of every size,” Proofpoint CEO Sumit Dhawan said in a 9 December statement.

“Together, we will extend our human and agent-centric security leadership to safeguard people, AI agents, and data, while expanding our reach to SMBs and MSPs with Hornetsecurity’s proven, scalable platform.”

Hornetsecurity delivers a strong portfolio centred on its 365 Total Protection suite, a Microsoft 365 security and data protection platform that covers email security, backup, compliance, awareness training, and access control.

“Joining Proofpoint marks a new chapter in our journey,” Hornetsecurity founder and CEO Daniel Hofmann said.

“Together, we’re uniquely positioned to deliver the most effective M365 security and data protection to MSPs around the world. Building on our time-tested and well-established channel-centric approach, our combined capabilities, shared threat intelligence, and aligned vision will drive a new level of innovation and value for our partners and customers globally.”

As part of the integration, Hornetsecurity will operate as a dedicated business unit within Proofpoint, focused on global MSP and SMB customers. Hofmann will lead the unit as executive vice president and general manager, with his leadership team remaining in place.

Proofpoint said customers should expect continuity of service, enhanced by its broader research and threat intelligence resources.

Hornetsecurity currently generates nearly US$200 million in annual recurring revenue and is growing at around 20 per cent year on year. Proofpoint said the acquisition underscores its commitment to Europe and its plan to deliver differentiated, AI-powered security to organisations regardless of size or geography.
