The event brought together over 300 defence leaders, academics and industry experts from 35 countries to address the growing challenges posed by cyber threats, disinformation and emerging technologies amid a shifting geopolitical landscape.

Cyber threats transcend national borders, and the UK’s participation underscores the growing importance of multilateral cooperation in this domain.

Lieutenant General Sir Tom Copinger-Symes, Deputy Commander of Strategic Command, joined panellists from Singapore and Japan to discuss how training, doctrine, force structure and capability development can build effective digital-era military forces.

The UK delegation highlighted how digital defence is becoming central to operational readiness, with a focus on integrating cyber effects, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous systems alongside human judgement and ethical considerations.

The panel also emphasised the importance of multinational operations and alliances in enhancing cyber resilience and interoperability.

The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Cybersecurity and Information Centre of Excellence (ACICE), established in 2021, acts as a regional hub to strengthen defence cooperation across the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and beyond, promoting information sharing and joint understanding of cyber and information warfare trends.

The UK, as an ASEAN dialogue partner, continues to support the centre’s efforts to raise awareness and build collective security across the region.

The UK’s involvement aligns with its Strategic Defence Review, which emphasises the need to strengthen global partnerships beyond NATO. As the nation responsible for leading the UK’s cyber operations and integrating digital effects into defence planning, Strategic Command reiterated that building global digital resilience means engaging deeply with allies across all regions.

This latest symposium provided a valuable platform to advance those goals and maintain a competitive edge in an increasingly contested digital battlespace.
