Pro bono partnership will continue after Excite Cyber’s acquisition of CBIT Digital Forensics, the AFP’s previous partner in the field.
Australian cyber security firm Excite Cyber has said it will remain the digital forensics partner of the Australian Federal Police after the company acquired the AFP’s previous provider, CBIT Digital Forensics.
Excite Cyber will now lend its expertise in digital forensics to assist the AFP in cases as wide-ranging as terrorism, child sexual exploitation, and animal cruelty.
“Our mission in these cases is to uncover the truth,” Bryan Saba (pictured), Excite Cyber’s CEO, said in a statement.
“When lives, children, or animals are at risk or when national security is threatened, our team doesn’t hesitate to lend their expertise.
“We are a values- and purpose-driven company supporting a safe Australia. We work closely with the Australian Federal Police on cases related to murder, terrorism, child exploitation and animal cruelty. For a lot of those cases, we roll up our sleeves and do those cases pro bono, donating our skills in the fight against crime.”
Excite Cyber’s digital forensics work revolves around what it calls a four-phase digital process. First, its forensics specialists freeze digital assets, then extract that data. They ensure chain of custody and also appear as expert witnesses at trials whenever needed.
“Our work includes assisting law enforcement in serious criminal investigations with digital evidence,” Saba said.
“We have extracted critical data in child exploitation cases and helped authorities identify and apprehend offenders operating through encrypted platforms. We are also proud of the work we have done with animal welfare bodies to identify individuals involved in animal cruelty.
“Our team contributes to extremely meaningful outcomes, protecting children, supporting victims, and defending the truth. It’s emotionally intense but deeply rewarding and is a part of who we are and what we believe in.”
