Exclusive: Salvation Army suffers alleged ransomware attack

Established in 1865, The Salvation Army is an international Christian charity and organisation that focuses on providing for those in need. It operates in over 130 different countries and provides addiction support, housing, emergency relief, clothing and essentials, and more.

On 27 May, The Salvation Army was listed on the dark web leak site of the Chaos ransomware gang, which claimed to have exfiltrated data.

The group did not provide any details of the incident or data leaked other than that it would be “released soon”, despite setting countdown timers for its other leaks.

It also set up a link labelled: “Show leaked data”, which only takes users to the listing, not displaying data. While inconclusive at this stage, this could suggest that the listing is misleading or potentially fake.

The Salvation Army is yet to comment on the incident. Cyber Daily has reached out for more information.

The Chaos ransomware gang is a brand new threat group, only first appearing roughly a month ago when it listed its first five victims.

As a result not much is known about the group. However, a Chaos Builder ransomware variant was linked to both the Onyx and Yashma ransomware variants back in 2022.

It is unclear whether or not the variant is connected to the new group.

This is an ongoing story. Cyber Daily will provide an update as it continues to develop.
