Passwordless web access is now available for customers of the ANZ Plus digital banking platform.
Australia’s ANZ bank has announced it will launch passwordless access to its ANZ Plus Web Banking in mid-2025.
This move will make ANZ the first bank to offer passwordless authentication to its customers.
Instead of using passwords – which are commonly shared between accounts and rather easier to compromise – passwordless authentication relies upon one of two methods to prove a customer’s identity.
The first is a passkey – either a fingerprint, facial scan, or mobile device PIN. Alternatively, customers can use their mobile number, which will be sent a login request directly from the ANZ Plus app.
According to ANZ, the adoption of passwordless authentication will protect its customers from password leaks, data breaches, and phishing attacks.
“The introduction of passwordless web banking will revolutionise the way customers access their bank account. Not only will it be easier than ever to log into your account, we’re helping our customers bank with confidence knowing their accounts are secure,” ANZ’s group executive Australia retail, Maile Carnegie, said in a statement.
“By introducing this change, we’re helping prevent customer login details from the risk of data breaches or phishing attacks – providing an extra layer of protection and one less thing for customers to worry about when it comes to banking security.”
