A year after Australia’s information watchdog agreed to a $50 million settlement to be paid to Australians impacted by Meta’s Cambridge Analytica snafu, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has set a deadline of 31 December to register for the payout.

According to the OAIC, more than 300,000 Australians were impacted by Meta’s sharing of user data collected by the This Is Your Digital Life app in 2013. Around the world, more than 87 million Facebook users were affected, their data harvested by the consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.

“The $50 million payment program was established by Meta Platforms as part of an enforceable undertaking the Australian Information Commissioner accepted from Meta in December 2024,” the OAIC said in a 12 December release.

“This brings to an end seven years of investigation and litigation related to the Cambridge Analytica matter in Australia.”

The payments program will not be managed by the OAIC, but rather by KPMG as an independent administrator.

Individuals can apply here.

Scam warning

With the deadline to register looming, the Information Commissioner has also warned of scammers taking advantage.

“Scammers may attempt to use this announcement to obtain personal information,” the OAIC said.

“If you receive a call from anyone offering to help with a payment or refund, hang up immediately.”
