NVIDIA is partnering with Australian cloud and AI infrastructure providers to expand the land, power, and data centre capacity needed to host multiple generations of its AI factories, targeting up to two gigawatts of capacity by 2027.
The participating NVIDIA Cloud Partners and infrastructure providers – Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, ResetData, Megaport, CDC, NEXTDC and AirTrunk – will operate the facilities, while NVIDIA will supply its DSX AI factory platform, accelerated computing, networking, software, and ecosystem support.
The expansion is aimed at the growing demand for high-performance computing as Australian businesses, researchers, and developers increase their use of AI models and applications.
“AI factories turn energy into intelligence – the essential resource of the AI economy,” Raj Mirpuri, vice president of global AI clouds and infrastructure ecosystem at NVIDIA, said in a September 10 statement.
“NVIDIA DSX is a full-stack platform compatible with the CUDA ecosystem and enhanced through software over the life of the infrastructure, making AI factories more productive, fungible and durable – and a new investable asset class.”
Mirpuri said the Australian partnerships would allow the infrastructure to support multiple generations of NVIDIA compute while expanding domestic access to accelerated computing and NVIDIA Nemotron open models.
The company said the approach would give Australian AI developers greater access for building locally relevant models, applications, and agents, while also supporting regional and global demand.
The proposed 2GW buildout would represent a significant expansion of Australia's AI infrastructure footprint, while NVIDIA is positioning the DSX model as infrastructure capable of adapting to successive generations of its accelerated computing technology.
The company said the additional capacity would help Australian innovators train, deploy and scale AI domestically rather than relying solely on overseas infrastructure.
Oliver Curtis, co-founder and co-CEO of Firmus, said his company’s Project Southgate initiative represents a “tangible commitment to building Australia’s AI future”.
“Together with NVIDIA, we are developing AI factories that will give Australian businesses, researchers and innovators access to world-class computing capacity at home, while positioning Australia to meet growing AI demand across Asia-Pacific,” Curtis said.
