According to Downdetector reports, the outage was first flagged around 9am this morning (20 August 2026), spiking at 877 outage reports in Australia at around 10:11am.

ChatGPT accounted for 83 per cent of the reports, followed by 7 per cent for both the app and logins, respectively.

On its status page, OpenAI confirmed it was aware of the outage.

“Chatgpt.com is down – all signups and logins are down as of right now,” the page said.

“We have identified that users are experiencing login issues for the impacted services.

“We are working on implementing a mitigation.”

Reports also suggested that the OpenAI API was also impacted, with the status page flagging as many as 12 API endpoints having issues.

OpenAI has not since commented on the incident, but the status page says that the company’s services are “fully operational”.

Opinion: The impact of AI outages, and how the technology is turning into a single point of failure

While routine outages of major services do occur, the impact of an AI outage is likely to only get more severe as time goes on.

The technology, which is being advertised as changing the future of work, is being increasingly depended on by virtually all industries, including critical infrastructure, financial institutions, and more.

While the same could be said about online services and platforms like Google Drive and the suite of programs Google offers, AI is being transformative in the way that it is eroding staff numbers, with businesses culling people in favour of AI tools and investment.

In essence, not only would companies lose access to the infrastructure upon which their operations are built, but they would also lose a significant part of their workforce, particularly as the staff who remain are being trained on AI systems rather than existing workflows.

Furthermore, API issues can send automated coding workflows and autonomous agents off the rails, doing damage in the form of errors.

Granted, this is the price of shifting to a new technology. When payment systems go down, businesses are forced to resort to manual payments or cash only. However, this impacts revenue and customer trust. However, if a business relies on AI, a small retailer may lose a lot more than just its payment systems.
