A number of Claude users reported a “529 Overloaded” message when sending Claude requests, both on the generative AI’s chatbot and on other tools that use the Claude API.
“Is claude down? i am not getting thru this error,” said one user on Reddit.
Another said: “Claude code showing me 500-internal server error, anyone else facing this?”
According to reports, a 529 error means that the service is being overloaded by requests.
At 7:29pm UTC on 29 July (around 5:29am AEST on 30 July), the company confirmed it was aware of the issue and said it had begun investigating an issue.
Less than an hour later, it said it had identified issues but did not go into detail as to what they were.
“We have identified an issue resulting in elevated errors across multiple models, and are working to resolve this. We will provide an update as soon as possible,” it said.
At 9:38pm UTC (7:38am AEST), the company said it had begun to fix the issues.
“We are continuing to work to fully resolve issues resulting in elevated requests and latency to Claude models. At this time, we are seeing recovery across most models. We will provide an additional update as soon as possible,” it said.
By 10:36pm UTC (8:38am AEST), Anthropic said the incident had been resolved.
At the height of the outage, Downdetector Australia noted 29 reports at roughly 6:19am AEST, while in the US, reports peaked at 5:50am AEST with 3,639 reports.
