AI is speeding up the time between idea and prototype, says CBA

In a release on its website, CBA announced how the technology allowed it to develop its new CommBank Companion agentic AI within its app for retail and business customers.

CBA technology lead for engineering platforms Helen Lau said the technology assisted the bank in developing the companion quickly.

“They did a prototype from an idea to a working mock-up that could be tested, refined and assessed by the business,” she said.

“We’re talking about hours now. In some cases, it used to be months.”

Lau attributes the quick development to the bank’s culture, which encourages experimentation and AI usage.

In fact, Lau said she herself created a multi-agent software tool that looks at how top engineers are using various tools, which she said would have taken “probably six to nine months” without AI.

She also said the technology is of incredible use to engineers.

“I keep telling CBA engineers, you don’t know how lucky you are,” she said. Lau added that the AI allows engineers to build skills quickly and implement them instantly into their daily work.

Lau said that thanks to AI, the bank is in a good position to build, introduce new capabilities, and deliver them to customers.

Most importantly, she said, engineers should keep adapting their craft and improving their capabilities, with the undertone of AI being an area to learn.

“My advice is to be constantly learning, constantly adapting, and practice, practice, practice, and practice. Practice what you learn in your day-to-day job. See how you can tweak and improve,” she said.

“Before you know it, if you practice some new skills or new capability every day, by the end of the month, you’ll have probably achieved something amazing already.”
