The supermarket announced a “collaboration” with OpenAI through which it would deploy AI throughout its workforce and business, starting with ChatGPT Enterprise at scale for its corporate workforce.

Coles has initiated the rollout with parts of the Coles corporate team, who will use ChatGPT Enterprise to “speed up research, reduce administrative tasks, surface data insights, support compliance and fuel idea generation”.

Accompanying the rollout will be a training program to bolster the AI skills of the corporate workforce, maximising the use of the technology.

The goal of the AI integration is to streamline corporate workflows, with staff being trained to automate tasks and make them more efficient.

“Customer experiences and operational efficiencies are the driving forces behind the exponential growth of AI, shaping the future of Australian retail. As AI continues to be embedded in our day-to-day tasks, our collaboration with OpenAI is set to transform the way our teams work,” said Caroline O’Brien, general manager of data and AI at Coles.

The full workforce rollout of the AI is set to take place in February 2026. However, Coles has used AI for over a decade already for order replenishing, product tailoring and staff rostering. It has also recently automated customer fulfilment centres and distribution.

“Across Coles, AI is already making a difference, whether that’s task-specific generative-AI chatbots that support our team members, advanced supply chain optimisation or computer vision designed to monitor fresh produce stock levels,” O’Brien said.

“Together with our partners, these technologies are helping us enhance decision making, boost efficiency, and unlock new opportunities to deliver for Australians.”

OpenAI’s international managing director, Oliver Jay, said the company was excited for the collaboration with the major supermarket.

“We are delighted to work with Coles to bring advanced AI solutions to their teams, empowering Coles to unlock new levels of productivity and innovation,” he said.

“By integrating robust AI tools across their operations, Coles is positioning itself to drive continued growth and set a new standard for competitive advantage in the retail sector. We look forward to supporting Coles as they harness the full potential of AI to deliver exceptional value to their employees and customers.”
