According to a post made by the Google-owned video platform, the company is exploring the ways in which AI can be used to enhance the YouTube experience.

“The first experiment, AI music hosts designed to deepen your listening experience by sharing relevant stories, fan trivia, and fun commentary about your favourite music on the YouTube Music app, is now live,” the company’s vice president, Aparna Pappu, said.

While currently only available to a “limited number of US-based participants”, users who enable the experiment will have an extra button called “Beyond the Beat”, which is always enabled for those who opt in, but it can be snoozed for an hour or a day at a time. This feature provides commentary and trivia; however, YouTube has disclosed that the AI may “contain mistakes”.

YouTube Labs also said the features “may be disabled without notice” and that “quality and accuracy may vary”.

“Your feedback and interactions may be used to improve Google’s products and services,” it said.

The AI experiments are being run by YouTube Labs, a team dedicated to testing the ways in which AI can be used on YouTube.

The company has released a number of AI features for YouTube creators so far, such as generative AI tools for the creation of YouTube Shorts, such as text-to-video using Google Veo 3, and an “Edit with AI” feature.

YouTube Music’s new feature comes roughly two years after Spotify’s DJ feature, which uses AI to curate music for listeners, while also adding a radio DJ host called DJ X, named after the company’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier Jernigan.

The host will comment on the artists users listen to, as well as overall listening habits. It will also occasionally provide trivia points on more well-known artists.
