The German branch of Vodafone has launched an AI influencer for its TikTok videos to advertise a new local plan.
In a video that was posted three times to the Vodafone_de (Vodafone Deutschland) TikTok account, an AI-generated influencer touts the benefits of Vodafone’s new 1,000 megabit internet plan.
Like many AI-generated videos, the clip had glitches in the character’s face, including moles that appear and disappear.
While most of the comments did not acknowledge that the advertisement was AI-generated, some expressed disappointment at Vodafone’s use of the tech.
“AI? Couldn’t you have just put a human in a living room? The amount of unnecessary energy and water wasted is crazy! Just because other stupid companies/people do it, doesn’t mean everyone has to follow suit. You could make a statement AGAINST AI! Really lame,” wrote one user, translated from German.
Another user said: “I don’t know if I want [the] AI to tell me about what to do here on the app and on the other socials…. Is the social team on vacation?”
Vodafone responded, saying that its social media team was not on vacation, but that it was embracing AI.
“Not on vacation, but we’ll try out different styles – AI is now so much in everyday life, you try them out in advertising too,” Vodafone said, translated from German.
This is not Vodafone’s first AI rodeo, having released a full commercial last year in which every shot was AI-generated with Lipstick AI.
“Lipstick AI Studio presents the groundbreaking new Vodafone commercial – Lead by the global creative agencies and produced by AI,” Lipstick AI said in the description of the video.
“With this campaign, directed by Sebastian Strasser, Vodafone showcases its fearless commitment to innovation and cutting-edge technology.
“Progress is driven by those brave enough to explore the unknown. We at Lipstick are grateful to have produced such a highly technological and forward-thinking AI-film.”
