The Office for AI will be responsible for a coordinated rollout of AI technology across the state’s public sector and will implement the AI Assessment Framework across the state government and establish an NSW AI operational policy.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said that the office will outline how the technology can and should be safely used across government.

“Artificial intelligence is increasingly part of our everyday lives, and as a government, we need to make sure it is used responsibly and provides clear benefits for the community,” said Dib.

“The new Office for AI will not only lead NSW’s use of AI but will set the roadmap on how to safely and responsibly incorporate and manage emerging technologies for more effective delivery of government services in the future.”

The new unit will be part of Digital NSW and will be overseen by the chief information and digital officer for the Department of Customer Service, Laura Christie.

“This new function within Digital NSW positions the NSW public sector to drive use of AI and harness its benefits across departments and agencies and for the people of NSW,” said Christie.

“We are building on our strong foundations to drive the trustworthiness and use of these new technologies, which will change the way we support customers across the state.”

The office itself will be made up of a number of multi-disciplinaries, covering business strategy, architecture and development and change management. The leader of the team will be appointed by the Department of Customer Service. It will work with the existing AI Review Committee, which analyses current AI projects that it deems high risk.

The NSW government has also announced that it will be adopting AI to speed up large projects like data centres and housing developments.

As originally reported by ITNews, in tender documents submitted by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on 1 September, the department is after a “ready-to-use” solution that will assist with planning documents and matching them against local planning regulations.

“This will add an important tool to the suite of tools available to planners as they assess larger and more complex proposals,” said Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully.

“This is about using technology to do more of the heavy lifting in the planning system while leaving the final decision to a human decision-maker.”
