AI development giant OpenAI has continued its interest in the Australian market, announcing it will open its first Australian office in Sydney before the end of the year.

OpenAI’s chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap, announced the move to develop a physical Australian headquarters, with the company now hunting for a local boss and 315 staff, none of which however are based in Australia.

“Australia’s government, businesses, and world-class developer ecosystem are already shaping the future of AI,” Lightcap said.

“We’re excited to expand our presence in Australia and build a local team to work closely with partners, customers, and the millions of Australians who use ChatGPT daily.”

The move is the latest in OpenAI’s campaign to cement itself as Australia’s go-to AI, having already organised partnerships with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

The company also said that the number of Australian users of its ChatGPT generative AI has soared over the last year, making Australia one of the top 10 markets when it comes to the number of ChatGPT subscriptions.

OpenAI also laid out a plan for Australia to become an AI powerhouse last month, part of which was forming partnerships between the AI giant and the Australian government.

“Australia has the potential to become the Indo-Pacific’s trusted hub for AI infrastructure,” OpenAI said in July.

“Australia leads on the core building blocks of data centre competitiveness: it has the highest land availability among peer nations, strong policy stability, efficient permitting processes and abundant access to renewable energy. These advantages, more than just low-average electricity costs, reinforce its appeal for major infrastructure investment.”

In its latest statements, the company said the new Sydney office will allow it to “better support its growing community of users” and “work more closely with policymakers and deepen collaboration with Australian researchers and institutions”.

The Sydney office will round out OpenAI’s Asia-Pacific presence with three locations, with the other two based in Singapore and Tokyo. The exact location of the Sydney office is yet to be revealed.
