The New York Times previously sued Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement after they used the publication’s content for AI training.
Famous newspaper and media publication The New York Times has licensed its work to Amazon, allowing the tech giant to train its AI.
In a statement on its website, the publication said that the agreement “will bring Times editorial content to a variety of Amazon customer experiences”, which include news articles, the publication’s food site NYT cooking, and its sports site The Athletic.
The publication added that the agreement “broadens the companies’ existing relationship and will bring additional value to Amazon customers and bring Times journalism to wider audiences”.
Amazon will display summaries and excerpts of editorial content by The New York Times on its products and services, including Alexa, and will also use it to train its models.
“The collaboration will make The New York Times’ original content more accessible to customers across Amazon products and services, including direct links to Times products, and underscores the companies’ shared commitment to serving customers with global news and perspectives within Amazon’s AI products,” added The New York Times.
The agreement comes as The New York Times is engaged in a legal battle with OpenAI and Microsoft after it was discovered that the publication’s articles were used to train ChatGPT without permission.
The New York Times launched a lawsuit against the tech giants in 2023. Despite OpenAI and Microsoft attempting to get the case dismissed, US District Judge Sidney Stein in March said that the publication could continue its lawsuit, adding that it had displayed “numerous” and “widely publicised” examples of ChatGPT generating content from its articles.
Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos currently owns one of the main competitors of The New York Times, The Washington Post, which he purchased in 2013 for US$250 million.
