OpenAI’s GPT-5 will consolidate all other company models

OpenAI’s new chatbot model is set to merge a number of capabilities from various models into one, consolidating their capabilities.

GPT-5 is set to combine a number of existing models to create a single powerful model that does everything better, eliminating the need for users to switch between multiple models, and delivering better results, according to Open AI vice president of research Jerry Tworek.

“GPT-5 is our next foundational model that is meant to just make everything our models can currently do better and with less model switching,” said Tworek in a Reddit AMA response.

Tworek also discussed OpenAI’s “Operator” product, which is able to perform web tasks for the user through its own browser. This includes tasks such as clicking, scrolling and typing.

“It’s still a research preview, but we’re planning to make some improvements soon, and it can become a very useful tool then,” he said.

“A lot of what we need to do is eventually bring those tools (codex, operator, deep research, memory) together so they feel like one thing.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested in February that GPT-5 will consolidate a number of models and will include its o-series models, which the company said are its “smartest and most capable models”.

These models are advertised as smarter but with longer response times, with the latest models drawing on “every tool within ChatGPT”.

Altman said that instead of a standalone release, o3 would be included as part of GPT-5, creating a model “that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks”. However, o3 and o4-mini were released in April after Altman delayed GPT-5 for a few months.

“Change of plans: we are going to release o3 and o4-mini after all, probably in a couple of weeks, and then do GPT-5 in a few months,” he tweeted in April.

“There are a bunch of reasons for this, but the most exciting one is that we are going to be able to make GPT-5 much better than we originally though [sic].

“We also found it harder than we thought it was going to be to smoothly integrate everything, and we want to make sure we have enough capacity to support what we expect to be unprecedented demand.”

There is currently no release date for GPT-5.

The current model, GPT-4.5, which was released in February and powers ChatGPT, is used by roughly 400 million people on a weekly basis, according to OpenAI’s chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap.
