ChatGPT will now link to articles published by The Washington Post in its query answers after OpenAI announced a partnership with the new publication.

OpenAI said the new partnership would strengthen ChatGPT’s ability to provide news by allowing it to refer to The Washington Post’s articles in its content.

The Washington Post announced today a strategic partnership with OpenAI to make high-quality news more accessible in ChatGPT. As part of this partnership, ChatGPT will display summaries, quotes, and links to original reporting from The Post in response to relevant questions,” said a statement published by The Washington Post.

“ChatGPT will highlight The Post’s journalism across politics, global affairs, business, technology, and more, always with clear attribution and direct links to full articles so people can explore topics in greater depth and context.”

The Washington Post believes that ChatGPT’s massive audience will also benefit the publication.

“We’re all in on meeting our audiences where they are,” said Peter Elkins-Williams, head of global partnerships at The Washington Post. “Ensuring ChatGPT users have our impactful reporting at their fingertips builds on our commitment to provide access where, how and when our audiences want it.”

Varun Shetty, head of media partnerships at OpenAI, said: “More than 500 million people use ChatGPT each week to get answers to all kinds of questions.”

“By investing in high-quality journalism by partners like The Washington Post, we’re helping ensure our users get timely, trustworthy information when they need it.”

AI chatbots are not considered a reliable source of information due to their tendency to hallucinate or accidentally falsify information, change details and more.

While having a popular and largely trusted news source may result in ChatGPT reporting news more accurately, it may also cause it to push a media bias.

According to media bias checker AllSides, The Washington Post is largely centred politically but does have a “Lean Left” bias, with the site citing a “story choice bias by choosing to focus on issues commonly considered important to the political left, such as police funding and claims made by former President Donald Trump,” as well as a few failed fact checks.

That being said, OpenAI has partnered with 20 news publications, including Vox Media, The Atlantic, and News Corp, which has been criticised for its strong right bias.
