The Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank, ANZ, and Westpac all announced a partnership with digital identity solution ConnectID this week in an effort to give customers greater control over their data and how it is shared.

ConnectID acts like a bridge between the data held by a trusted identity provider – in this case, banks – and other businesses needing to verify a customer’s identity. ConnectID never sees the customer data, but the bank can confirm it, all without the third party needing to see it either.

According to research conducted by Kantar on behalf of Australian Payments Plus (AP+), which manages ConnectID, more Australians than ever are aware of digital ID offerings. As of December 2024, seventy-two per cent of Australians were aware of the technology, compared to 52 per cent a year earlier.

“ConnectID represents a game changer for individuals who want more control over their data,” Andrew Black, managing director of ConnectID at AP+, said in a statement.

“Our solution empowers people to verify their identity securely without oversharing, and the support of the big four banks offering millions of Australians a trusted and seamless way to use digital identity is vital.”

Sujeet Rana, chief digital officer at National Australia Bank, said ConnectID was about giving customers more control.

“At NAB, empowering our customers is at the heart of what we do, and choosing who you trust to verify you is just one of the ways we hand back control,” Rana said.

“With ConnectID, our customers can securely verify their identity and maintain visibility over where they’ve shared their data and with whom. Plus, nothing is shared without express consent. This is an exciting milestone in Australia’s digital identity journey.”
